“We Thought We Were Coming for Jobs”—Oyo Police Rescue 19 Ghanaians from Human Trafficking Trap

It was supposed to be a fresh start.

For 19 young Ghanaians—14 men and 5 women—the journey to Nigeria was filled with hope. They had been promised jobs, better pay, and a chance to build a future. But what awaited them in Ibadan was not opportunity—it was captivity.

Thanks to a swift and intelligence-led operation by the Oyo State Police Command, these victims were rescued from what authorities are calling a well-organized human trafficking ring operating out of the Kajorepo area of Akinyele Local Government Area.

🕵️‍♂️ The Operation: A Door Locked from the Outside

Acting on credible intelligence, officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and tactical teams executed a search warrant on a suspicious building. What they found was chilling:

  • A house locked from the outside,
  • 19 Ghanaians held inside,
  • And no sign of the “employers” who brought them there.

The victims had been lured with fake job offers, only to be exploited by traffickers who remain at large.

💔 “We Were Lied To”

According to police spokesperson CSP Adewale Osifeso, the victims have provided critical testimonies that are helping investigators trace the network behind the operation.

“They were deceived, transported across borders, and held in conditions that violated their dignity,” Osifeso said.

The victims have since been handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service, which is working with Ghanaian authorities to reunite them with their families.

⚠️ A Growing Crisis in West Africa

This case is not isolated. It highlights a growing trend of cross-border trafficking in West Africa, where vulnerable youth are targeted with promises of jobs, education, or migration opportunities—only to be trapped in exploitation.

The Oyo State Police have vowed to intensify their crackdown on trafficking networks and are urging the public to report suspicious activities.

🧠 Final Thoughts—Hope Rescued, But Justice Still Pending

These 19 young people were lucky. They were found. They were saved. But for every rescue, there are countless others still trapped in silence.

This isn’t just a police story—it’s a human story. A story of hope manipulated, of dreams hijacked, and of a system that must do better to protect its most vulnerable.
