Anambra Govt Introduces Plea Bargain for Criminal Suspects, Excludes Murder, Kidnapping, Armed Robbery and RapeThe Anambra State Government has introduced a plea bargain policy for suspects facing criminal trials in the state, excluding those charged with murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and rape.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke (SAN), announced the directive on Tuesday, stating that the initiative is aimed at decongesting correctional centres and reducing the backlog of criminal cases in the courts.
According to the Attorney General, all state prosecutors have been directed to issue the prescribed plea bargain forms to eligible defendants before their pleas are taken in court. The directive, dated July 22, 2026, applies to all offences created under the laws of Anambra State, except murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and rape.
The policy forms part of the Soludo administration’s ongoing criminal justice reforms designed to improve the efficiency of the state’s justice system.
Under a plea bargain arrangement, a defendant agrees to plead guilty to an offence in exchange for a reduced sentence, subject to the approval of the court.
The state government described the initiative as a bold step that could significantly ease pressure on both the correctional system and the judiciary.
