United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has welcomed Emmanuel N. Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, marking a fresh chapter in the leadership of one of Africa’s biggest financial institutions. Nnorom officially assumed the position on August 21, 2026, following the retirement of Tony O. Elumelu after completing the 12-year tenure limit for non-executive directors of banks.

Nnorom is, however, no stranger to UBA. His relationship with the bank spans more than eight years in senior leadership, during which he served as Managing Director/CEO of UBA Africa, Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Financial Officer, among other executive positions. He later joined the UBA Board as a Non-Executive Director.
A chartered accountant with more than four decades of experience in banking, finance, audit, operations and corporate governance, Nnorom also brings experience from outside the banking sector. He previously served as President and CEO of Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc and later as CEO of Heirs Holdings.
His appointment comes at an important point in UBA’s expansion across Africa and international markets. The bank currently operates across 20 African countries, with additional operations in the UK, US, France and the UAE.
With such a long history within the institution, Nnorom takes over with considerable knowledge of UBA’s journey and the expectations that come with leading a major pan-African financial group. His task now will be to build on the foundation laid by Elumelu while steering the bank into its next phase of growth.
