Senate Confirms Joash Amupitan as INEC Chairman

The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following a rigorous screening session on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

The Confirmation Process

  • Amupitan was nominated by President Bola Tinubu, who urged the Senate to approve him for the role.
  • He was screened for three hours in the Committee of the Whole, where lawmakers grilled him on his impartiality, legal background, and plans for electoral reform.
  • The confirmation was passed via voice vote, with no dissenting voices, according to Senate President Godswill Akpabio

Amupitan’s Promises

During the screening, Amupitan pledged to:

  • Ensure INEC’s independence and credibility.
  • Conduct a comprehensive audit of the Commission’s operations.
  • Investigate the logistics failures and technical glitches—especially with the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV)—during the 2023 general elections.

“We must find out what happened and why the confidence of many Nigerians was shaken,” Amupitan said.

He also dismissed reports linking him to the All Progressives Congress (APC), asserting his commitment to neutrality and electoral integrity.

With Amupitan now at the helm, will INEC regain public trust ahead of the next election cycle? Nigerians are watching closely.
