Gunmen Kill Serving Nigerian Army Colonel During Suspected Kidnap Attempt in Abuja

A serving Nigerian Army officer, Colonel A. A. Ude, has been killed after gunmen reportedly attacked him at his residence in the Kurudu area of Abuja.Colonel Ude, an indigene of Ibagwa-Aka town in Igbo Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, was reportedly attacked on Monday evening, July 27, 2026, shortly after returning home from work.

According to reports, the armed men allegedly ambushed the senior military officer after he alighted from his vehicle and attempted to abduct him. Colonel Ude reportedly resisted the attackers despite being outnumbered, thwarting their attempt to take him away.

The confrontation, however, turned deadly as the gunmen opened fire, fatally shooting the officer.

Members of his household were also caught up in the attack. His wife, driver and security guard reportedly sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to hospital for medical attention.

The incident has sparked concern over the security situation in the Federal Capital Territory, particularly the growing threat posed by armed attacks and attempted kidnappings in parts of Abuja.

Following his death, Colonel Ude was buried on Tuesday, July 28, at Mambilla Mosque in Abuja, in accordance with Islamic burial rites.

The circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation, while efforts are reportedly ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.
