NIGERIA EVACUATES FIRST BATCH OF 270 CITIZENS FROM SOUTH AFRICA AS FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ACTS WITH URGENCY

The Federal Government has moved swiftly to protect its citizens abroad, approving a full-scale evacuation operation targeting Nigerians caught in the worsening crisis in South Africa. Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja greenlit five dedicated evacuation flights operated by Air Peace, with the mission of bringing home over 1,000 registered Nigerian nationals who had been stranded and vulnerable in the Southern African nation.

The first flight in the series has already made history. Carrying an initial batch of 270 carefully screened individuals, the Air Peace aircraft departed Johannesburg and touched down safely in Lagos, marking the successful opening chapter of what promises to be a full and determined rescue of Nigerians who found themselves in harm’s way far from home.

The operation reflects a rare but welcome instance of the Nigerian government acting with both speed and structure in the face of a diaspora emergency. By deploying Air Peace — one of Nigeria’s most prominent carriers — and working through a coordinated screening and registration process, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs signalled that this is not a hasty or disorganised response, but a deliberate state action to fulfil its most basic duty: the protection of Nigerian lives, regardless of where those lives are threatened.

For the 270 who just landed in Lagos and the hundreds more still awaiting their turn, the message from Abuja is clear — you have not been forgotten. As the remaining four flights prepare to complete the mission, all eyes will be on the Federal Government to ensure that every registered citizen on that list boards a plane home. Nigerians are watching, and so is the world.
