Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has honoured 10 police officers who were killed during a gun battle with suspected bandits in Kebbi State, describing their deaths as a painful reminder of the heavy price security personnel pay to keep Nigerians safe.
The officers, members of the Special Intervention Squad, were killed during an encounter with suspected bandits along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State on August 10, 2026. Two other officers were injured in the attack, while two civilians also lost their lives.
Speaking at a memorial parade held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Disu paid tribute to the fallen officers, saying they died while carrying out the oath they took to serve, protect and defend the lives and property of Nigerians.
According to the IGP, the officers had intercepted a heavily armed group of suspected bandits moving between Zamfara and Kebbi States when the confrontation broke out. Despite the heavy casualties suffered by the police, Disu said the officers fought bravely and managed to neutralise at least 17 of the suspected bandits and destroy four motorcycles belonging to the attackers.
Disu said the sacrifice of the fallen officers would not be forgotten, stressing that police personnel across the country continue to put their lives on the line every day so that millions of Nigerians can go about their lives with greater security.
He also assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force would not back down in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other forms of violent crime. He pledged continued cooperation with the Armed Forces, other security agencies, state governments and local communities to track down criminals and bring those responsible for attacks to justice.
While expressing his condolences to the families of the deceased officers, the IGP assured them that the Force would continue to support them and honour the memory of their loved ones.
The memorial ceremony was a solemn reminder that behind every security operation are men and women who risk everything in the line of duty. For the 10 officers honoured, the final price of service was their lives.
