The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially announced a one-week closure of the First (Old) River Niger Bridge. The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, disclosed this during an inspection tour in Anambra State.
Reason for Closure: Contractors need an uninterrupted window to repair vital components vandalized by criminals (who stole critical bolts, nuts, and disconnected an overhead steel bar), resurface the road with asphalt, and install security architecture.
Alternative Route: All motorists will be systematically diverted to the Second Niger Bridge for the duration of the one-week closure.
New Security Upgrades: To prevent future vandalism, the federal government is installing CCTV cameras and solar-powered streetlights across the bridge, linking them directly to security agencies for real-time monitoring.
Structural Safety Assurance: Minister Umahi clarified that reported vibrations or movement on the First Niger Bridge are normal due to its structural bearings and do not indicate structural failure.
Additionally: The government has banned all sand mining within a 10km radius of the River Niger to safeguard the foundations of both the First and Second Niger bridges from structural erosion.
