The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has made it clear that Cristiano Ronaldo remains part of the national team picture, despite the recent controversy surrounding his departure from Portugal’s training camp and the questions that have followed about his international future.
FPF president Pedro Proença has publicly backed the 41-year-old forward, describing him as an icon of Portuguese football and saying he will continue to have a place with the national team whenever he is fit, available and wanted by the coach. Proença also played down the recent disagreement between Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus, describing it as a misunderstanding that should be resolved internally.
Ronaldo’s future with Portugal became a major talking point after he left the team’s training camp following discussions over his role in the squad. The episode came after the veteran forward was left on the bench during Portugal’s victory over Norway and was subsequently informed that he would not start against Denmark.
Ronaldo later confirmed that he had decided to leave the camp after speaking with Proença. The Portuguese federation subsequently confirmed his departure but said the team would continue preparing for its upcoming fixtures with the remaining players.
The situation immediately generated speculation about whether the incident could mark the end of Ronaldo’s international career. At 41, the forward is already in the twilight of a remarkable career with Portugal, having represented the country for more than two decades and established himself as its most prolific goalscorer and most-capped men’s player. But the latest comments from the federation suggest that the door has not been closed.
Proença has been particularly emphatic about Ronaldo’s importance to Portuguese football. He described him as a player who has given more than two decades to the national team and referred to him as a major symbol of Portuguese identity. The federation president also insisted that Ronaldo’s inclusion is based on his sporting merit and that he remains available to the national team whenever he is fit and ready.
The FPF president’s comments also appear aimed at cooling tensions between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus. Rather than presenting the situation as a permanent breakdown, Proença described what happened as a misunderstanding and indicated that there is time for the two parties to sit down and resolve the matter.
Jesus himself has also left the door open for Ronaldo to return. Following Portugal’s latest fixtures, the coach said Ronaldo could come back if he wanted to, reinforcing the position that the veteran forward’s international career has not necessarily come to an end.
That position is significant because Ronaldo’s relationship with the Portuguese national team goes far beyond his performances on the pitch. He has been the face of Portuguese football for much of the 21st century, winning major international honours and becoming one of the most recognisable athletes in the world.
His international career has included the historic 2016 European Championship triumph and the 2019 UEFA Nations League title. He has also carried Portugal’s attack through several generations of players, remaining a key figure even as younger stars have emerged around him.
Ronaldo’s numbers with Portugal underline the scale of his contribution. He remains the country’s all-time leading scorer, with 146 international goals in 234 appearances, according to Reuters.
His influence has also been recognised by his teammates. Bruno Fernandes recently described Ronaldo as the greatest symbol of the Portuguese national team and urged people not to allow the current controversy to divide the squad or the country. Fernandes stressed that Ronaldo’s contribution to Portuguese football has earned him a lasting place in the country’s football history.
For now, the immediate issue is not whether Ronaldo’s achievements can be questioned, but whether he will continue playing an active role under Jorge Jesus. The coach has already made it clear that being part of the squad does not necessarily guarantee a starting position, while Ronaldo’s departure has shown that questions surrounding his role can become complicated.
The federation appears keen to find a way through the disagreement rather than allow it to develop into a permanent split. Reports indicate that Proença is interested in facilitating a renewed understanding between Ronaldo and Jesus, with the aim of keeping the forward involved with Portugal.
Portugal has also shown that it can compete without its captain. The national team secured victories during the recent international window despite Ronaldo’s absence and advanced to the Nations League quarter-finals. That development adds another dimension to the debate over his role, as the team prepares for a new phase under Jesus.
Still, the federation’s position is that Ronaldo’s presence remains valuable when his fitness, form and the coach’s plans make his involvement appropriate.
For Portuguese supporters, the possibility of seeing Ronaldo in the national shirt again will naturally attract enormous attention. His career has been intertwined with Portugal’s football identity for so long that even a dispute over selection has become a major national sporting story.
The coming international window could therefore provide another chapter in the Ronaldo-Portugal story. Whether he returns immediately, takes more time away or eventually brings his international career to a close will ultimately depend on the player and the national team’s sporting plans.
What is clear for now is that the Portuguese Football Federation has not shut the door on Cristiano Ronaldo. Instead, its president has publicly reaffirmed the player’s importance, while Jorge Jesus has also indicated that a return remains possible.
After more than two decades of service, Portugal appears willing to give its greatest football icon an opportunity to decide how the final chapter of his international career should unfold.
