Peter Obi wants to be ADC Flag Bearer Without Party Primaries _ Babachir Lawal, ADC Chieftain

Babachir Lawal, an African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, reportedly stated on May 5, 2026, that Peter Obi prefers a consensus candidacy over participating in primary elections, provided that the consensus choice is himself.

The ADC leadership has clarified that while they aim for a consensus candidate, they will proceed with competitive primaries if the aspirants cannot reach an agreement. The ADC is facing internal friction, including a reported attempt by a faction in Adamawa State to suspend high-profile members like Lawal and Atiku Abubakar, which the party’s national leadership subsequently declared invalid.

Lawal, who backed Obi in 2023, is now signaling that the ADC won’t just hand over the ticket. While the party likes the idea of a united front, they’ve made it clear: if the big names (Obi, Atiku, Amaechi) can’t agree, it’s going to a full-blown primary. The ADC has become the new “it” spot for the opposition. We’ve seen Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi making moves there, trying to build a force strong enough to take down the APC in 2027.
