A United States federal court has officially closed the chapter on one of West Michigan’s most devastating embezzlement scandals. According to the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Nigerian-born scholar and former nonprofit chief executive Dr. Nkechy Ezeh was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison. Chief U.S. District Judge Hala Y. Jarbou delivered the decisive sentence, directly remanding the 61-year-old into custody. Judge Jarbou openly characterized Ezeh as a fraud and a thief, highlighting that the stolen millions were stripped directly from underprivileged, low-income children.
The legal fallout stems from a widespread, multi-year conspiracy engineered by Ezeh between 2017 and 2023. As reported by TheCable, the former associate professor utilized her leadership role at the Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative (ELNC) to siphon roughly $1.4 million in government grants and private donor money. Working alongside the organization’s finance director, Sharon Killebrew, Ezeh funneled money into sham daycare centers, ghost consulting payrolls, and fabricated vendor invoices. She also concealed serious conflicts of interest by secretly moving cash into unregistered entities created with stolen identities.
Beyond her 70-month prison term for wire fraud conspiracy, Ezeh received a concurrent 60-month sentence for federal tax evasion. Media coverage by the Punch Newspaper indicates that she failed to report her illicit income, leaving a massive trail of unpaid taxes over several years. As part of her ultimate punishment, the federal court ordered Ezeh to pay full restitution of $1.4 million to her victims, along with an additional $390,174 payment penalized by the Internal Revenue Service.
The systemic damage left behind by Ezeh’s financial greed has permanently shattered her local community. Investigations documented by Radio Nigeria reveal that her systemic looting caused the absolute collapse and closure of the ELNC nonprofit organization. This forced shutdown abruptly left 35 employees jobless without any prior warning notice. More critically, it completely halted early childhood services, advocacy programs, and daily meals for thousands of vulnerable preschool children living across the poorest neighborhoods of West Michigan.
