Twenty prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who were abducted while travelling through Imo State have regained their freedom after a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving the Nigerian military, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.
One other civilian who was also held by the kidnappers was rescued during the operation, bringing the total number of people released to 21.The rescue brings an end to days of uncertainty for the affected families, who had been anxiously waiting for the safe return of their relatives after the abduction along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State.
According to reports from security sources, the victims were rescued at about 4:28 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, following sustained search-and-rescue operations by the security agencies. They were subsequently taken to a DSS medical facility in Owerri, where they are receiving medical attention and undergoing necessary medical checks.
The prospective corps members had reportedly been travelling from Oyo State towards their NYSC orientation camps when they were attacked and abducted in Imo State. Reports indicate that the incident occurred on October 1, with the victims travelling through the Umunoha axis of the Owerri-Onitsha Road.
The incident had generated widespread concern because the victims were young graduates on their way to commence the compulsory national service programme. Their abduction also renewed concerns about the safety of travellers using major roads in the South-East, particularly at a time when thousands of prospective corps members were travelling to different orientation camps across the country.
Security agencies subsequently intensified efforts to locate the abducted graduates and establish contact with the kidnappers. The operation eventually led security operatives to the area where the victims were being held, culminating in their successful rescue at Amakohia-Ubi in Imo State.
Although the full details of the operation have not been made public, security officials have described the rescue as the outcome of sustained coordination and intelligence gathering among the various security formations involved.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the victims were rescued following sustained and coordinated search-and-rescue operations involving the police, military, DSS and other security agencies. Authorities have also indicated that efforts are continuing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the abduction.
The condition of the rescued victims is also receiving attention. Following their release, the 20 prospective corps members and the civilian were moved to a DSS medical facility in Owerri for treatment and medical examination.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, visited the rescued victims at the DSS facility. He was accompanied by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the Director of the DSS in the state and the Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade. The NYSC leadership’s visit was aimed at assessing the condition of the victims and offering support following their ordeal.
The rescue has been greeted with relief, particularly by families and relatives who had spent days waiting for information about the whereabouts of their loved ones.
The incident had initially raised fears about the fate of the prospective corps members after reports emerged that gunmen had intercepted vehicles conveying them along the Owerri-Onitsha corridor. The development attracted the attention of security agencies and government authorities, who mounted pressure to ensure that the victims were located and brought back alive.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has also commended the security agencies involved in the rescue operation, particularly the inter-agency collaboration that contributed to the safe recovery of the victims.
The successful operation is being viewed as an important development in the ongoing fight against kidnapping in Imo State. It also highlights the importance of intelligence sharing and cooperation among the military, police, DSS and other security formations when dealing with hostage situations.
However, the rescue of the victims does not bring the matter to an end. Security agencies are expected to continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the abduction and intensify efforts to identify, track and arrest the kidnappers responsible.
For the rescued graduates, the immediate priority remains their recovery after spending several days in captivity. Medical personnel are expected to continue monitoring their physical condition while security authorities work to establish the full circumstances of their abduction.
The incident has once again placed the issue of road safety and the security of travellers in the spotlight. The Owerri-Onitsha Road is an important transportation corridor connecting communities and states in the South-East, making effective security coverage along the route crucial for commuters, commercial transport operators, students and other travellers.
For families of the 20 prospective corps members, however, the most important news is that their loved ones are finally free.
After days of fear and uncertainty, the graduates have been recovered alive and are now receiving medical attention. The focus will now shift to their recovery, while the security agencies continue the hunt for those behind the abduction and work to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
The rescue also serves as a reminder of the enormous responsibility placed on security agencies to protect citizens, particularly young Nigerians travelling across the country for education, employment, national service and other legitimate activities.
