Dangote Industries is reportedly planning to build a 1,000-megawatt liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant in Kenya as part of its proposed refinery project in Lamu, in what could become another major expansion of the Nigerian conglomerate’s operations across Africa.
The development comes as discussions between Dangote Industries and the Kenyan government continue over the proposed refinery project. According to Africa Report, the Kenyan authorities are currently negotiating with the company over plans to increase the proposed power generation capacity to 1,000MW.
The planned power plant would be linked to Dangote’s wider investment plans in Lamu and is expected to provide a substantial source of electricity for the proposed refinery and potentially support other industrial activities in the area.
The move is significant for Kenya, a country that continues to pursue additional investments in energy and industrial infrastructure as it seeks to strengthen its power supply and attract large-scale projects.
