A lecturer, Dr. Nasa’i Muhammad Gwadabe, who teaches at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) and Northwest University Kano, has been accused of sexually harassing a married postgraduate student and allegedly delaying her academic project for two years after she rejected his advances.
According to the woman’s husband, the lecturer repeatedly expressed romantic interest in his wife and allegedly wrote “I just like you” on her project documents. He also reportedly insisted on meeting her outside the university environment. Suspecting foul play, the husband said he took over his wife’s WhatsApp account and continued the conversation to gather evidence.
The family claimed a meeting was eventually arranged at Bayero University Kano (BUK). While the student drove to the location, her husband hid inside the vehicle. They alleged that during a recorded phone call, the lecturer directed her to the ASUU Secretariat. When he approached the vehicle and discovered the husband inside, he allegedly attempted to flee but was stopped.
Eyewitnesses said the woman’s cries attracted campus security personnel and passersby, who reportedly assaulted the lecturer before the situation was brought under control. Videos of the incident have since gone viral on social media.
The family also alleged that the lecturer has been removed as the student’s project supervisor. They further claimed the woman has received threatening phone calls since the incident and that the matter has been reported to the police.
As of the time of reporting, neither Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Northwest University Kano nor Bayero University Kano has issued an official statement on the allegations. Dr. Gwadabe has also not publicly responded. Meanwhile, the incident has sparked fresh debate over allegations of “sex for marks” in Nigerian universities, although many have urged the public to await the outcome of official investigations before drawing conclusions.
