Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to reintroduce a targeted petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027 has stirred a fresh political storm, drawing sharp reactions from the Presidency, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other presidential contenders.
Atiku argues that a targeted subsidy could help cushion the impact of rising fuel prices and ease the financial pressure on ordinary Nigerians. However, the Presidency accused him of making a political U-turn, while APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda questioned where the government would get the money to fund such a policy.
The proposal has also attracted criticism from other political figures, including Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim and Omoyele Sowore, who raised concerns about the sustainability and practicality of returning to any form of petrol subsidy.
With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the growing disagreement over fuel subsidy is likely to remain a major part of Nigeria’s economic and political conversation. For many Nigerians still battling high living costs, the bigger question is not just whether subsidy should return, but whether any proposed solution can genuinely put food on the table without creating another financial burden for the country.
