The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) branch, has called on Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, to urgently intervene in the financial crisis affecting the institution, saying lecturers are owed more than ₦8 billion in various outstanding payments.
The union also warned that its ongoing industrial action would continue until the state government provides a clear and acceptable framework for settling the accumulated arrears and addressing the university’s wider funding challenges.
In a statement signed by the ASUU NSUK branch chairperson, Dr. Zubairu Abdulmumini-Loko, and secretary, Gambo Dauda, the union said its congress had resolved to sustain the strike until there is a credible commitment towards resolving the issues.
ASUU called for a written, comprehensive and time-bound payment plan jointly prepared by the relevant authorities and formally presented to the union. According to the lecturers, such an arrangement would provide certainty and enable the university to return to its statutory responsibilities.
The union further urged the university management and Governing Council to intensify discussions with the Nasarawa State Government and other relevant stakeholders to develop a clear payment schedule for the outstanding liabilities.
Breakdown of the Outstanding Arrears
According to the union, the debts owed to its members include five months of Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), amounting to ₦1.64 billion, as well as Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) arrears covering the 2018/2019, 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic sessions, put at ₦2.084 billion.
The lecturers are also demanding arrears from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increments, amounting to approximately ₦2.857 billion.
Other outstanding payments listed by ASUU include:- ₦533.88 million in ₦70,000 minimum wage arrears- ₦578.935 million in ₦35,000 wage award arrears- ₦239.108 million in 2025 promotion arrears and annual incrementsThe union said the accumulated obligations have placed significant pressure on its members and the university system.
While expressing regret over the disruption caused by the strike, ASUU called for the immediate establishment of a credible negotiation involving the Nasarawa State Government, NSUK Management, the Governing Council and the union.
It maintained that only a concrete and time-bound settlement plan would provide the confidence needed to resolve the dispute and pave the way for the resumption of normal academic activities at the university.
