The Obidient Movement has issued a fresh warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and other political actors ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that the outcome of the polls must be determined by the votes of Nigerians and not by political influence, intimidation or alleged manipulation.
The warning was issued by the movement’s National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, who said Nigerians would ultimately hold political actors accountable for their roles in the electoral process. Tanko’s comments came amid an increasingly heated political atmosphere ahead of 2027, with Wike and supporters of the opposition movement exchanging strong remarks over political influence, electoral strength and the likely battle for votes in Rivers State and other parts of the country.
According to Tanko, the movement believes that every Nigerian should be allowed to freely choose the candidate or political party they want without interference. He argued that elections should be decided at polling units through the lawful counting and declaration of votes rather than through the influence of powerful politicians.
The Obidient Movement has repeatedly raised concerns about the credibility of the electoral process ahead of 2027. In February, the group criticised the removal of the phrase “real-time” from provisions concerning electronic transmission of election results in the proposed amendment to Nigeria’s electoral framework. The movement argued that stronger technological safeguards were necessary to improve transparency and public confidence in the results-management process.
Tanko also referred to comments attributed to Wike concerning the 2023 elections and subsequent political contests. He interpreted Wike’s remarks about being capable of delivering electoral victories for the ruling party as an indication that political influence could be used to affect election outcomes. Those are Tanko’s allegations and interpretation; they should not be treated as established facts without independent evidence.
Wike, for his part, has continued to project confidence in his political influence, particularly in Rivers State. On September 21, 2026, during an appearance on TVC’s Journalists Hangout, he dismissed claims that Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar won the 2023 presidential election in Rivers State, arguing that elections are determined by votes cast at polling units and results officially declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The exchange highlights the wider political tension already building more than a year before the 2027 presidential election. The Obidient Movement says its focus is on protecting the ability of citizens to vote freely and have their votes counted, while Wike has maintained that political victories must be established through the formal electoral process.Beyond the argument between individual political actors, the larger issue is the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.
The 2027 election is expected to generate intense competition across the country, making the conduct of political parties, candidates, security agencies, election officials, civil society organisations and voters particularly important.
The Obidient Movement has therefore urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and pay attention to developments surrounding the electoral process. Its position is that no politician, regardless of office or political influence, should be allowed to determine the outcome of an election outside the ballot box.
The movement had earlier launched a campaign aimed at preventing electoral manipulation, encouraging supporters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards, organise at polling-unit level and participate in efforts designed to protect votes.
As political activities intensify ahead of 2027, the debate is likely to move beyond the personalities of Wike, Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar and President Bola Tinubu to broader questions about electoral transparency, institutional independence, security, vote protection and the ability of Nigerians to freely exercise their constitutional right to choose their leaders.
For the Obidient Movement, the message is straightforward: the 2027 elections should ultimately be decided by voters and the lawful counting of their votes. The challenge now is whether Nigeria’s political institutions and competing political actors can ensure that the process commands sufficient confidence before, during and after election day.
