The Nigeria Police Force has invited social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, to provide evidence supporting his claim that some police officers stationed at checkpoints allegedly work with kidnappers and bandits.
The invitation followed comments made by VeryDarkMan during the recent Nigerian Bar Association conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He had alleged that some officers at checkpoints on major highways identify wealthy travellers and pass information about their movements to kidnappers, who then target them for abduction and ransom.
Reacting to the allegation, the police described the claim as serious, unsubstantiated and capable of damaging public confidence in the force. In a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, the police said allegations of such magnitude must be backed by credible evidence.
The Force therefore asked VeryDarkMan to present any information or evidence in his possession, particularly evidence showing that officers at checkpoints identify wealthy individuals and subsequently share their details with kidnappers.
According to the police, any evidence provided by the activist will be treated seriously and investigated thoroughly. The Force also urged members of the public who have information about police misconduct to report it through the appropriate channels instead of relying only on public accusations.
The police maintained that officers deployed to checkpoints across the country are there to prevent crime, detect criminal activities and protect motorists and other members of the public.
The Force also pointed out that police officers themselves have frequently come under attack from terrorists, kidnappers and other violent criminals. It said several personnel have been ambushed and killed, while police stations, operational bases and other security assets have also been targeted.
However, the police acknowledged that any officer found to have compromised his or her duties would face disciplinary action and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.
While defending its personnel, the Force warned against making blanket allegations that could undermine the morale of officers and further erode public trust.
The police stressed that legitimate criticism remains important for accountability, but insisted that serious allegations, particularly those involving national security and the lives of citizens, should be supported by verifiable evidence.
The invitation now puts the spotlight on VeryDarkMan to substantiate his claims as the police await whatever evidence he may have to support his allegations.
