G-100 Consults Opposition Leaders, Sets August 18 Summit for 2027 Unity Talks
A political advocacy group, G-100, says its recent consultations with opposition leaders have laid the groundwork for a broader conversation on how Nigeria’s opposition parties can work together ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday and signed by Salihu Lukman on behalf of G-100. According to the statement, representatives of the group held separate meetings with national chairmen, presidential candidates and running mates of various opposition parties as part of efforts to explore possible areas of cooperation.
The consultations, the group explained, were deliberately conducted away from the media to give political leaders the freedom to speak openly on sensitive issues without the pressure that could come with premature public disclosure.
“We have deliberately kept these consultations away from the glare of the media, in recognition of the sensitivity of many of the discussions and the need to allow party leaders to engage frankly and constructively without the pressure of premature public commentary,” the statement said.
G-100 said one major point of agreement emerged from the meetings: opposition parties need to put aside their differences and develop a more coordinated political strategy if they are serious about presenting a credible alternative to Nigerians in 2027.
The group acknowledged, however, that achieving such unity would not be an easy task. It said political parties and their leaders would have to make difficult concessions and put aside personal and partisan interests for the sake of a broader national objective.
According to the group, those consulted agreed that building a strong and effective opposition would require “sacrifice, compromise and a willingness to place the larger interests of the country above narrow partisan or individual considerations.”
Against this backdrop, G-100 announced plans for a political unity summit scheduled for August 18, where participating parties are expected to begin more detailed discussions on possible areas of collaboration and the modalities for greater political cooperation.
The group warned that continued fragmentation among opposition forces could weaken their ability to challenge the ruling establishment and offer Nigerians a credible alternative at the polls.
“At this critical moment in our national journey, fragmentation among those seeking to provide that alternative serves neither the opposition nor the Nigerian people,” G-100 stated.
The organisation stressed that the consultations carried out over the past week were only the beginning of what could become a lengthy process of negotiations. It therefore appealed to opposition leaders to approach the discussions with patience, courage and a willingness to make sacrifices.
“The task ahead will require patience, courage and, above all, sacrifice,” the group said.
The August 18 summit could consequently prove significant as opposition parties weigh whether they are prepared to move beyond individual ambitions and explore a common political strategy ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The development comes at a critical stage in the electoral process, as political parties continue to upload the details of their presidential candidates and running mates on the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
