Abia State Governor Alex Otti has condemned the alleged brutal killing of Chika Ibe, an indigene of the state, by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Cape Town, demanding a swift and transparent investigation into the incident.
Governor Otti, on behalf of the Abia State Government and people, expressed deep sadness over the death of Ibe, who hailed from Lokpaukwu, Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, and extended his condolences to the bereaved family.In a statement issued by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, the state government described the incident as shocking and unacceptable, calling for justice for the deceased and accountability for those responsible.
The condemnation followed disturbing videos circulating online, which allegedly show police officers assaulting Ibe during an operation in Cape Town. Reports from the footage claim that an officer used a plastic bag in an alleged attempt to suffocate him, despite his cries for help.
Ibe was reportedly heard shouting, “I’m dying,” in the video, while the officers allegedly continued their actions until he stopped breathing. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Abia Government also raised concerns over another reported case involving Egwabor Patrick Chuks, another Nigerian who was allegedly shot in South Africa and is currently receiving medical treatment for severe injuries.
Governor Otti’s administration recalled previous incidents of attacks, killings, and harassment involving Nigerians in South Africa, stressing that citizens living abroad deserve protection, dignity, and the right to live without fear.
The state government called on the South African authorities to immediately conduct an independent investigation, identify those involved, and ensure that anyone found guilty faces the full consequences of the law.
Abia State further urged the South African government to take urgent steps to prevent further attacks against Nigerians, describing the situation as a painful reminder of the need for stronger unity and peaceful coexistence among Africans.
