A group of lawyers has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, asking it to compel security agencies to provide maximum protection for Peter Obi and all other candidates expected to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In the suit, the lawyers argued that no state governor or government has the constitutional power to prevent any Nigerian from travelling freely within the country or carrying out lawful activities. They described the reported comments attributed to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, warning Peter Obi against entering the state without his approval, as unconstitutional, unlawful and inconsistent with democratic principles.
The applicants are seeking a declaration that Peter Obi should not be subjected to threats, intimidation, harassment or any form of political victimisation because of his political beliefs, ethnicity or religion. They also argued that protecting the lives and property of citizens remains the primary constitutional responsibility of the Federal Government.
The suit further asks the court to order President Bola Tinubu, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to direct the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies to provide adequate security and intelligence for Peter Obi and every other 2027 presidential candidate.
President Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, the Commandant-General of the NSCDC and the Governor of Edo State have all been listed as respondents in the case, which was filed on July 27.As of the time of filing this report, the court has not fixed a date for hearing the matter.
