Trump to attend World Cup final on Sunday, says White House

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to attend Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, marking his first appearance at the tournament.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump’s visit would conclude what the administration described as the most watched, safest and most successful World Cup ever hosted in the United States. Before the final, Trump is also expected to attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York.

Earlier in the tournament, Trump made headlines after asking FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the red card shown to U.S. striker Folarin Balogun during a match against Bosnia. FIFA later lifted the player’s one-match suspension, although the United States still suffered a heavy 4–1 defeat to Belgium in their next game.

Trump has often taken credit for the United States securing the right to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico. He has also maintained a close relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in recent years.

His expected role in presenting the World Cup trophy has already generated discussion, following last year’s Club World Cup final when he remained on the podium during Chelsea’s trophy celebrations after presenting the title to captain Reece James, an incident that attracted widespread attention
