NAFDAC vs. VeryDarkMan—Drug Raids, Social Media, and a Brewing Storm

A Viral Showdown Over Public Health

When the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) launched its massive crackdown on open drug markets, it expected resistance—but not from social media influencers.

Now, the agency is calling out popular online activist, VeryDarkMan (VDM) for allegedly inciting traders in Onitsha to defy regulatory measures, raising serious questions about the role of influencers in public policy battles.

NAFDAC’s War on Illegal Drugs

Between February and March 2025, NAFDAC stormed major open drug markets in Idumota, Aba, and Onitsha, seizing over a trillion naira worth of banned, expired, and counterfeit drugs.

The agency discovered poor storage conditions, unregistered medicines, and a network of sellers dealing in illicit narcotics—a crisis it described as a direct threat to public health.

Following the raids, the Onitsha market reopened on March 9, with over 2,500 traders complying with new regulations. But not everyone was on board.

VDM vs. NAFDAC—A Social Media Standoff

According to NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Christiana Adeyeye, a small faction of traders linked to banned substances is resisting the agency’s oversight—and VDM is allegedly fanning the flames.

VDM’s viral videos reportedly criticize NAFDAC’s enforcement and encourage non-compliance.

⚡ NAFDAC warns that his actions could violate the Cybercrime Act, potentially triggering an investigation.

⚡ The agency urges law enforcement to step in, claiming that influencers should not undermine efforts to protect public health.

Public Reaction—Regulation or Overreach?

As the controversy unfolds, Nigerians are divided.

🗣 Supporters of VDM argue that NAFDAC’s raid hurt small businesses, forcing many legitimate traders out of work without clear alternatives.

🗣 Public health advocates insist that Nigeria must clean up its drug distribution system, even if it means disrupting long-established markets.

What Happens Next?

🔍 Will security agencies investigate VDM?

⚖️ Could this case set a precedent for regulating influencer activism?

📢 Will NAFDAC’s tough stance spark a nationwide debate on drug control measures?

With tensions rising, this battle between regulation and resistance is far from over.
