The Onitsha-Owerri Expressway was turned into a scene of horror today following a fatal tanker explosion that has claimed the lives of two individuals and left another fighting for survival.
The accident, which occurred at the Ihiala axis of the busy highway, once again highlights the recurring danger of heavy-duty vehicles on Nigerian roads.
According to eyewitness reports and officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the disaster was triggered by excessive speeding.
How the Incident Unfolded:
The Anambra State Fire Service and FRSC officials arrived at the scene to battle the inferno and manage the resulting traffic. The explosion caused a total standstill on the expressway, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded for hours as firemen worked to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby properties.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Anambra State has issued a stern warning to tanker drivers to adhere to speed limits and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition.
”This is a preventable tragedy. Speeding with highly inflammable content is a recipe for disaster. Our hearts go out to the families of the deceased.” — FRSC Spokesperson.
This incident adds to the growing tally of tanker-related accidents in the South East, sparking fresh calls for the enforcement of “safe-to-load” standards and the mandatory installation of speed limiters on all articulated vehicles.

Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident.
Do you think the government should ban tankers from plying certain roads during peak hours? Or is the solution strictly about road repair and speed enforcement?
