As Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took the stage to mark two years in office – and he didn’t hold back.
His message? The economy is stabilizing, tough reforms are paying off, and the worst of the crisis is behind us.
But for millions of Nigerians still struggling with high food prices, rising unemployment, and a volatile naira, the big question remains: Is the reality on the ground matching the promise of prosperity?
In his speech, Tinubu made it clear: drastic reforms were inevitable.
🔴 Scrapping fuel subsidies—a move that sent pump prices soaring but freed up trillions of naira for development.
🔴 Unifying exchange rates—taming market instability but sending costs sky-high overnight.
🔴 Major tax overhauls—raising revenue but putting small businesses under pressure.
“We had no other choice,” Tinubu insisted. “It was either these reforms or a complete fiscal collapse.”
Despite the growing pains, Tinubu highlighted signs of recovery:
✅ Inflation is slowing, with staple food prices beginning to stabilize.
✅ Over $8 billion in new foreign investments have poured into Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
✅ External reserves have surged from $4 billion to $23 billion in just one year.
✅ Debt service-to-revenue ratio has dropped from nearly 100% to under 40%.
But for ordinary Nigerians, these figures mean little if salaries remain stagnant and jobs remain scarce.
In one of his biggest announcements, Tinubu removed VAT on essentials like:
🚫 Food 🚫 Healthcare 🚫 Education 🚫 Rent 🚫 Public transport
He claims this will ease financial pressure on households, putting more money back into people’s pockets.
Is this a game-changer, or just a small step in a long recovery journey? Nigerians will soon find out.
Beyond the economy, Tinubu linked progress to security, praising military efforts that have restored peace to parts of the Northwest.
Other key areas of his Renewed Hope agenda include:
🏥 6,500 health centers being revamped
💉 Free dialysis for kidney patients
🌽 Boosting mechanized farming to fight food shortages
⚡ Energy sector upgrades with solar-powered solutions
For all the numbers, reforms, and ambitious projects, the real test lies in how everyday Nigerians feel.
🚶♂️ Are businesses thriving again?
🚶♀️ Is food actually more affordable?
🚶♂️ Are young Nigerians seeing better job opportunities?
Tinubu is confident his policies are laying the foundation for lasting prosperity. But only time – and the people—will decide if his vision truly delivers.
