The Federal Government has officially announced the dualization of the strategic 420.6km Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe highway. This massive infrastructure undertaking has been designated as the fourth Renewed Hope road legacy project under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The announcement was reinforced by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, who revealed that the project is aimed at seamlessly connecting the North-Central, North-West, and North-East geopolitical zones. Why This Project is a Game-ChangerThe Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe road is a vital artery for Nigerian commerce, but it has long been plagued by safety concerns and bottlenecks, particularly along the sharp curves and altitude changes between Jos and Akwanga.Key Project Details:Total Distance: Approximately 420.6 kilometres of critical federal highway.
Funding Strategy: The government is negotiating a $1.1 billion facility from the China EXIM Bank to fund the construction.
Contractor Appointed: Construction firm Messrs CGC has been appointed to handle the project.
Timeline: While the project was originally conceptualized years ago, actual construction under this new mandate is expected to begin in earnest by 2025.Six-Lane Expansion: Plans indicate the road will be expanded into a dual carriageway, with some sections proposed as a six-lane highway to boost capacity.Strategic Importance and Lobbying EffortsThis approval follows intensive lobbying by regional leaders, including Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who emphasized that the road is the primary gateway into Plateau State and a hub for regional integration. Senator Diket Plang also pushed for its inclusion as a “legacy project” to rectify the historical exclusion of the North-Central and North-East from major federal rail and road infrastructure.”The dualization of this road is not just a necessity; it is a long-term investment that will stimulate agriculture, job creation, and tourism across three major zones.” — Insights from the Federal Ministry of Works.A Move to Restore Public TrustThe project had previously stalled after being awarded in 2018 due to funding challenges and the collapse of a prior Memorandum of Understanding. By relaunching it as a “Legacy Project,” the current administration aims to finalize the integration of the North with the South-East and South-West corridors.Do you think this dualization will finally solve the traffic and safety issues on the Jos-Akwanga axis?
