Amid swirling rumors of a political alliance between Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election, Obi has broken his silence, making it clear that his focus is not on power but on Nigeria’s pressing issues.
Reports surfaced earlier this year claiming that Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s former Vice President, had offered Obi the Vice Presidential slot in a proposed single-term coalition ticket. The alleged meeting took place in the United Kingdom, where Atiku reportedly assured Obi that he would serve only one term before handing over power.
However, Obi has now dismissed the speculation, stating that his only coalition is one against hunger, poverty, and the failing healthcare and education systems in Nigeria.
Speaking during a visit to the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kubwa in Abuja, Obi emphasized that he is not desperate for any political office. Instead, he remains committed to fighting corruption and bad governance, which he believes are the real enemies of Nigeria.
“The only coalition I am interested in is the one against hunger, poverty, and the bad state of healthcare and education in the country. I am not desperate for any position,” Obi stated.
Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential election behind President Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, has been at the center of discussions about a potential opposition coalition. Many believe that a united front between Obi, Atiku, and other opposition figures could unseat Tinubu in 2027.
However, Obi has firmly rejected any suggestion that he has agreed to run as a VP candidate, calling such claims political maneuvering driven by selfish ambitions.
During his visit to the Anglican Diocese, Obi also made a financial donation to support a school project, highlighting his belief that education should be a priority. He criticized the government for failing to provide free and quality education, forcing religious institutions to carry the burden.
Obi was recently seen exchanging pleasantries with President Tinubu and former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi at the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV in Rome. Addressing the encounter, Obi clarified that he is not an enemy of Tinubu, stating that his only enemy is corruption and bad leadership.
While Obi remains focused on governance issues, the political landscape ahead of 2027 continues to evolve. Whether he will lead an opposition coalition or pursue a different path remains to be seen.
For now, his message is clear: Nigeria’s problems must take priority over political ambitions.
