Peter Obi Slams Tinubu’s Foreign Trips: “You’re Not a Tourist”

Labour Party’s Peter Obi has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu for his frequent international travels, calling them “insensitive” and “indifferent” to Nigeria’s worsening crises.

What’s the Issue?

President Tinubu departed Abuja on August 14 for a 12-day trip to Japan and Brazil, with a stopover in Dubai. He’s scheduled to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama from August 20–22.

Obi, posting on his official X account, questioned the necessity and timing of the trip, especially since Tinubu had just returned from Brazil weeks earlier and had also visited St. Lucia before attending the BRICS Summit.

Obi’s Key Criticisms:

  • “You’re not a tourist” – Obi urged Tinubu to prioritize domestic engagement over foreign travel.
  • “Nigeria is bleeding” – He cited rising insecurity, economic hardship, and hunger.
  • “No visits to troubled states” – Obi noted that Tinubu has yet to visit any of Nigeria’s crisis-hit regions.
  • “Empty conferences” – He argued that many of these trips yield little tangible value for Nigerians.

“What our nation needs now is security of lives and properties, economic stability, and ensuring that our people have food on their table,” Obi said.

💬 Is Obi right to call out the President’s travel schedule? Or are these trips necessary for Nigeria’s global standing?
