In an era where fake news spreads faster than wildfire, Peter Obi has found himself at the center of yet another controversy—this time, accused of flying to Rome to plead with President Bola Tinubu over an alleged ₦225 billion debt tied to Fidelity Bank.
But Obi isn’t having any of it.
In a statement released on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the former Labour Party presidential candidate categorically denied the claims, calling them false, malicious, and politically motivated.
“It’s obvious that the biggest business for blackmailers now is talking about Peter Obi from every negative perspective,” he wrote, expressing frustration over constant attacks on his reputation.
According to Obi, he was in Rome for the installation of Pope Leo XIV, as part of his longstanding commitment to the Catholic Church.
Did he meet President Tinubu? Yes—but not in a private or political setting.
“Let me categorically state that I have never sought an audience with, nor met, President Tinubu since he assumed office, except for a brief greeting at the inauguration Mass at Saint Peter’s Basilica,” he explained.
Another claim floating around the internet suggests that Obi owns Fidelity Bank, which is supposedly linked to the ₦225 billion Supreme Court judgment.
Again, Obi shut it down completely, stating: “For the record, I do not own Fidelity Bank. Throughout my career, I have served as Chairman/Director of three banks, including Fidelity, but I do not hold a majority stake.”
Obi concluded his statement with a direct message to those spreading falsehoods:
“To those peddling these lies, I offer a simple prayer: May God grant you the virtues of gratitude and understanding that we came here with nothing and will go with nothing.”
The controversy highlights deepening political divisions, with misinformation weaponized against key figures.
But one question remains—where did the rumor start, and who benefits from it?
Whatever the truth is, one thing is certain—Obi refuses to stay silent.
