In the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, a dramatic prison break unfolded at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State. Seven inmates escaped after a heavy rainstorm caused structural damage to the facility’s perimeter wall, creating an unexpected breach.
According to Abubakar Umar, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), the rainstorm struck around 2 a.m., weakening the old infrastructure and leading to the collapse of a section of the prison wall.
With the security perimeter compromised, the seven inmates seized the opportunity and fled into the night.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
The NCoS is now working closely with security agencies and community leaders to track down the fugitives and reinforce the facility’s security to prevent further incidents.
Authorities are urging the public to provide credible information that could aid in the recapture efforts. Citizens can report sightings or suspicious activity via the NCoS Response Desk lines:

This isn’t the first time Nigeria has witnessed prison escapes due to infrastructure failures.
With aging infrastructure and climate-related vulnerabilities, Nigeria’s prison security system faces serious challenges. Will this latest escape push authorities to prioritize facility upgrades and prevent future jailbreaks?
For now, the hunt is on, and Osun residents remain on high alert.
