No More Bloodshed!” — President Tinubu Vows to Crush Farmer-Herder Crisis with New ‘Mega Ranching’ Blueprint- President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not playing games with Nigeria’s national security anymore. At the opening of a high-stakes National Economic Council (NEC) conference in Abuja today, February 9, 2026, the President sent a clear message: the era of “open grazing” tension is coming to an end. The President has officially “pinnned” his administration’s legacy to a total overhaul of the livestock sector, promising that modern ranching is the only way to stop the deadly clashes between farmers and herders. The “Surrounding Facts”: What’s Really on the Table? If you’ve been following the news, you know this isn’t just a speech.
The New Ministry in Charge: In a historic move, Tinubu created a standalone Ministry of Livestock Development, headed by Idi Muktar Maiha. This ministry is currently working on a 10-year roadmap (2026–2030) to turn cows into “cash” rather than “conflict. “The “Mega Ranch” Plan: The Federal Government has already secured partnerships, including a massive deal with JBJ Brazil to establish a 100,000-hectare cattle ranch in Niger State. This single ranch is designed to house over 100,000 bulls! Conversion of Grazing Reserves: The President has directed the NEC to identify and rehabilitate old grazing areas and villages across the country, converting them into modern, sedentary ranches with water, feed, and veterinary services. The Money Factor: Nigeria’s livestock sector is estimated to be worth ₦33 Trillion, yet it contributes less than 3% to our GDP. Tinubu’s goal is to double this contribution by 2035, reducing the $1.5 billion we spend annually on importing dairy products.
Why Now? The President linked this reform directly to National Security. He noted that banditry and terrorism have been fueled by the instability in the livestock sector. “I promise Nigeria that this will be delivered. We must eliminate these areas of conflict and make livestock reform economically viable,” the President stated.
The Challenges Ahead: While the plan sounds great on paper, there are three “elephants” in the room: Land Politics: Will the 36 State Governors (who control the land) actually release enough space for these ranches? Mistrust: Many farming communities are still wary of “land grabbing,” while some pastoralists are resistant to changing their ancestral nomadic lifestyle.
Funding: Converting 821 million livestock into a modern system will require trillions in investment.
The Verdict: Tinubu is betting big on the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP) to succeed where previous governments failed. If this works, Nigeria could finally see an end to the “farmer-herder” headlines and a massive boost in the price of meat and milk.
What’s your take? Do you think ranching will finally bring peace to Nigeria, or is this another “political” project? 🥩🥛Let’s discuss in the comments! 👇🏾
