Maryam Abacha, widow of former military Head of State General Sani Abacha, has dismissed long-standing claims that her husband looted billions of dollars from Nigeria’s treasury.
📢 Speaking in a televised interview, Mrs. Abacha insisted that there is no concrete evidence proving her husband embezzled public funds.
📢 She questioned the credibility of accusations, asking, “Who is the witness of the monies that were being stashed? Did you see the signature or the evidence of any monies stashed abroad?”.
📢 She claimed that funds her husband reportedly secured for Nigeria “vanished” shortly after his death, implying mismanagement by subsequent administrations.
🔍 Successive Nigerian governments have recovered hundreds of millions of dollars linked to Abacha, commonly referred to as “Abacha loot”, from Switzerland, the U.S., and the U.K..
🔍 Despite these recoveries, Mrs. Abacha maintains that her husband did not steal from Nigeria, arguing that the accusations are politically motivated.
🔍 She also criticized the media, urging journalists to “educate the people” rather than “bastardize people”.
