Lagos Cracks Down on Illegal Waste Disposal—₦250,000 Fine or 3-Month Jail Term

Strict Penalties for Environmental Offenders

The Lagos State Government has announced tougher enforcement measures against illegal refuse dumping and littering, warning that offenders will face a ₦250,000 fine or up to three months in jail.

Why the Crackdown?

🚨 Dumping waste in drains, medians, and roads contributes to flooding, environmental degradation, and public health risks.

🚨 Over 3,000 offenders have already been arrested and prosecuted, with authorities ramping up enforcement.

🚨 Cart pushers remain banned, as they are linked to indiscriminate waste dumping.

Government’s Warning to Residents

📢 Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized that repeat offenders will face even harsher penalties.

📢 Developers obstructing roads with construction materials will have their sites sealed and face prosecution.

📢 Open defecation and urination remain prohibited, with over 1,710 public toilets available across Lagos.
