Katsina Government Secures N3.8 Billion Loan for 3,890 2026 Hajj Slots

The Katsina State Government has taken a decisive financial step to safeguard the spiritual aspirations of its citizens by approving a N3.8 billion loan facility. This strategic intervention is specifically designed to secure 3,890 Hajj slots for intending pilgrims ahead of the 2026 pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. Governor Dikko Radda announced the move during a farewell ceremony for the current contingent, explaining that the loan was necessary to meet the strict financial obligations set by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. By providing this upfront capital, the state ensures that its allocated quota remains intact despite the rising costs associated with international travel and foreign exchange.

This significant funding goes beyond merely holding spots and includes a comprehensive welfare package to ease the financial burden on individual pilgrims. As part of the state’s commitment, the government will fully sponsor the “Hadaya” sacrificial rites for every pilgrim and provide a direct travel allowance of $500 to each participant. These measures are intended to provide a cushion against the high cost of the 2026 pilgrimage, which is currently estimated to be approximately N8.5 million per person. Governor Radda emphasized that these efforts are aimed at ensuring that the pilgrims can focus on their religious duties without the immediate stress of fluctuating costs or logistical shortfalls.

The urgency of this loan is underscored by the rigid timelines imposed by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah regarding the Nusuk electronic wallet system. Nigeria faces a critical deadline of December 21, 2026, to finalize payments, with the Saudi authorities warning that any delays could result in a permanent reduction of the national quota from 66,000 to 50,000 slots. By securing the N3.8 billion facility now, Katsina State is proactively insulating its residents from these international regulatory pressures. This move prevents a scenario where qualified pilgrims might be excluded from the journey due to the administrative or financial bottlenecks that often plague the national registration process.

To ensure the safety and spiritual guidance of the travellers, the Katsina State Government has also deployed a specialised team of 200 officials to accompany the 3,890 pilgrims. This delegation includes medical professionals, spiritual guides, and logistical coordinators who will provide round-the-clock support throughout the duration of the stay in the Holy Land. The state’s multi-billion naira investment reflects a broader policy of prioritising religious welfare and maintaining a strong presence in the global Hajj community. This structured approach aims to make the 2026 exercise one of the most organised and financially supported pilgrimages in the state’s history.
