MINISTER OF POWER QUITS TINUBU’S CABINET TO CHASE OYO GOVERNORSHIP. The Federal Executive Council has lost one of its key members. Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has tendered his resignation from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, opting to step down from one of the most consequential ministries in the federal government to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
This is not a surprise to close political watchers. Adelabu, popularly known as Penkelemes, has never hidden his desire to return to Oyo State politics and plant his flag at the Government House in Agodi. His stint as minister, while giving him national visibility and executive experience, was always viewed by many as a stepping stone back to the state where his political heart lies. His resignation raises immediate and serious questions.
The Ministry of Power is not a ministry you walk away from without consequences. Nigeria’s electricity crisis remains one of the most stubborn problems dragging down the economy, and Adelabu had been at the centre of efforts — however sluggish — to reform the sector. Finding a capable replacement quickly will be critical for Tinubu, who cannot afford for the power sector to drift into further neglect ahead of 2027.
Back in Oyo State, the political temperature will rise sharply with this announcement. Adelabu ran for governor before and came close. He has a political structure, a recognizable name, and the Oluyole political dynasty behind him. His entry into the 2027 governorship race puts him on a collision course with the incumbent Governor Seyi Makinde, one of the strongest opposition figures in the country and a man who has proven he knows how to win elections.
The battle for Oyo State just got a whole lot more interesting. Adelabu is banking on his federal experience, family legacy, and political networks to unseat Makinde. Whether that will be enough against a sitting governor with deep grassroots support is the question that will define the next season of Oyo politics.
One man leaves the national stage to chase a state throne. The game has begun.
