Fake Dollars, Ritual Promises & A High-Stakes Arrest: EFCC Nabs Two Suspects in Kano

A Shocking Discovery on the Road

In a dramatic turn of events, two suspects were intercepted in Kano State while transporting counterfeit $899,800—a staggering amount that could have fueled illicit financial activities.

The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirmed the arrest of Abubakar Hussaini (42) and Sahabi Adamu (53), who were initially stopped by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) operatives along Maiduguri Road, Wudil.

A Ritualistic Twist

Investigations revealed that the suspects were en route to Kila Village in Jigawa State, where they planned to meet Muhammad Walo, a middleman who would introduce them to Mallam Mashiru, a self-proclaimed spiritualist.

Mashiru allegedly promised to “transform” the counterfeit dollars into real currency through ritual prayers, a bizarre scheme that raises questions about the intersection of fraud and superstition.

EFCC Steps In

Upon discovering the fake notes, NDLEA operatives handed the suspects over to the EFCC, which has now launched a full-scale investigation into the case.

The anti-graft agency confirmed that the suspects will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.

A Growing Trend of Financial Crimes

This arrest comes just two months after the Federal High Court in Lagos convicted businessman Okorie Sunday for failing to declare $299,000 and €100 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Justice Deinde Dipeolu sentenced Sunday to six months imprisonment and ordered the forfeiture of the undeclared funds to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

What’s Next?

With financial fraud cases on the rise, authorities are doubling down on efforts to curb illicit currency dealings. The EFCC’s latest bust serves as a warning to fraudsters, proving that no amount of ritual prayers can turn fake money into real wealth.
