End of an Era: Former Chief Justice Mohammed Uwais Dies at 88

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Mohammed Lawal Uwais, has passed away at the age of 88. His family confirmed his death, stating that he passed in the early hours of Friday, June 6, 2025.

A Legacy of Judicial Excellence

Born in Zaria, Kaduna State, Uwais was a towering figure in Nigeria’s legal history. He served as Chief Justice from 1995 to 2006, making him one of the longest-serving CJNs in the country. His tenure was marked by judicial reforms, constitutional development, and a strong push for judicial independence.

Champion of Electoral Reform

After his retirement, Uwais continued to shape Nigeria’s democratic landscape. In 2007, he was appointed to chair the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee, which produced the Uwais Report—a landmark document advocating for electoral transparency, independent oversight, and the introduction of electronic voting.

Tributes Pour In

Legal experts, politicians, and human rights advocates have paid tribute to Uwais, describing him as a beacon of integrity. Professor Chidi Odinkalu recalled how, under Uwais, Nigerians voted the judiciary as “Man of the Year” in 2006.

His funeral is scheduled to take place today after Juma’at prayers at the National Mosque in Abuja, in accordance with Islamic rites.

Justice Uwais leaves behind a legacy of fairness, wisdom, and judicial excellence. May he rest in peace. 🕊️
