Chaos in Taraba: Examination Hall Collapses on WASSCE Candidates

A terrifying incident unfolded at Government Secondary School, Namnai, in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State, as an examination hall collapsed on students writing their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

What Happened?

🔴 Heavy rainfall and strong winds struck the area on Wednesday evening, causing the classroom structure to cave in.

🔴 Students, teachers, NYSC corps members, and exam supervisors were trapped under the rubble.

🔴 Many victims sustained serious injuries, including fractures, and were rushed to a nearby primary healthcare center for treatment.

Eyewitness Accounts

Local resident Alhaji DanAzumi Lauris described the scene as chaotic, stating that the second batch of students had just begun their exams when the storm hit.

“The classrooms collapsed just minutes after the exam began. Many students were injured, and residents had to rescue them,” Lauris said.

⚠️ Several houses in Namnai were also destroyed by the storm.

⚠️ In Jalingo, the state capital, heavy rainfall disrupted WASSCE exams, forcing students to stay at their centers until after 1 a.m. due to flooding and poor visibility.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on whether the examination schedule will be adjusted or if students will be given another opportunity to complete their papers
