BREAKING: Court Voids Malami’s Bail, Sends Ex-AGF, Son & Wife Back To Prison Over Alleged N8.7 Billion Fraud!
If you thought the Abubakar Malami saga was winding down β think again! Today’s court proceedings just turned up the heat several notches, and the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice is now officially back behind bars β alongside his son and his wife!
Here’s What Happened Today πThe EFCC re-arraigned former AGF Abubakar Malami (SAN), alongside his wife Asabe Bashir and son Abdulaziz Malami, before the Federal High Court in Abuja, following the reassignment of the case after two judges had earlier withdrawn from the matter. The case landed before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja β and she wasted absolutely no time making her position clear. The court held that since the matter had commenced afresh before it, all previous proceedings β including the bail earlier granted by Justice Emeka Nwite β were legally extinguished, making a fresh bail application entirely necessary. (Daily Post Nigeria)In other words? That N500 million bail Malami had carefully processed and perfected in January? Gone. Voided. Dead in the water.Malami’s lead counsel, the distinguished Joseph Daudu, SAN, tried his best β reminding the court that his clients had fulfilled all bail conditions and urging the judge to simply adopt the same terms in the interest of justice. The court was unmoved.Following the ruling, Malami and his son were ordered to be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre, while his wife was sent to the Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State β pending the hearing and determination of a fresh bail application. (TVC News)The matter has been adjourned to March 6, 2026, for the hearing of fresh bail applications and commencement of the trial. What Are They Accused Of? This is NOT a small case. The EFCC is prosecuting the defendants over alleged money laundering offences amounting to a staggering β¦8,713,923,759.49 β that’s over N8.7 billion. They face a 16-count charge bordering on conspiracy, procuring, disguising, concealing and laundering proceeds of unlawful activities, contrary to the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. (TikTok)One of the counts is particularly eyebrow-raising. Count six alleges that Malami and his son, between November 2022 and October 2025, indirectly took control of over N1.36 billion paid through the Union Bank Plc savings account of Meethaq Hotels Limited β funds they “reasonably ought to have known” constituted proceeds of unlawful activities. (Independent Newspaper Nigeria)Note that timeline carefully β November 2022 to October 2025. That means some of these alleged offences were committed while Malami was still AGF under the Buhari administration. Let that sink in.All three defendants β Malami, his wife, and his son β pleaded not guilty to all 16 counts. The Backstory You Need To Know This has been a wild ride since the case began. When Malami was first remanded at Kuje in late December 2025, over 50 DSS operatives laid siege to the prison compound β reportedly waiting to re-arrest him on separate terrorism financing allegations the moment he walked out on bail. (Instagram) The situation got so tense that sources revealed Malami had quietly instructed his legal team to slow down his own bail processing to avoid being immediately rearrested at the prison gates. You truly cannot make this up.His son Abdulaziz reportedly also “suddenly fell ill” shortly after arriving at Kuje β and was rushed to the prison clinic for observation. (Instagram) Critics on social media were, let’s just say, not very sympathetic. The Bigger Picture Remember β this is the same Abubakar Malami who, as Nigeria’s top law officer for eight years under President Buhari, was the nation’s chief guardian of justice and the rule of law. The same man who prosecuted others for corruption. The same man who wielded enormous power over Nigeria’s legal system.Today, he is a defendant in a prison remand. Heading back to Kuje. With his son.Whether you believe this is justice finally catching up or a politically motivated witch-hunt, one thing is undeniable β the mighty have indeed fallen far.The next major date to watch is March 6, 2026, when fresh bail applications will be heard. Will Malami walk free again β or will he remain behind bars as the trial kicks off?We will be right here watching. Stay locked in.
