In a bold and explosive statement, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has revealed what many have long feared—insiders within Nigeria’s political and military circles are actively aiding Boko Haram insurgents.
“We have informants and collaborators within the Nigerian armed forces, within the politicians, and within the communities. What we shall do is strengthen our intelligence and deal with them ruthlessly,” Zulum declared in an interview with News Central’s Breakfast Central.
His words sent shockwaves across the nation. For years, speculation swirled that someone within the system was leaking information to insurgents, allowing them to evade military operations and strike targets with precision. But now, Zulum has put names to the shadows—this is more than suspicion, it’s confirmation.
Beyond exposing collaborators, Zulum painted a larger picture of why Nigeria’s battle against Boko Haram remains unresolved.
Weaponry disadvantage: The insurgents have superior technology, while Nigeria’s military lacks proper equipment.
Failed intelligence measures: The system is compromised, making military strategies ineffective when informants are working against them.
Repentant insurgents: While over 500,000 surrendered fighters claim to have reformed, Zulum admits not all have fully abandoned terrorism.
“Insurgency will never be ended by kinetic measures alone. We must ensure that the non-kinetic measures are also properly put in place,” Zulum emphasized.
Zulum didn’t just expose informants—he sent a direct plea to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning him to prioritize real intelligence over political maneuvering.
“The forest guard shall be provided immediately. The President of Nigeria needs to listen to those who can differentiate their left from their right.”
For Nigeria, this revelation poses an uncomfortable question—how deep does the betrayal run?
With these allegations now out in the open, Nigerians will be looking to see:
Will these politicians and military officers be investigated?
How will this affect military operations against Boko Haram?
Can Nigeria ever fully rid itself of internal sabotage?
The truth is out, and now action must follow.
