APC Chairman Dies After Slumping During Reconciliation Meeting in Kogi

Tragedy struck the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State on Friday following the sudden death of the party chairman in Ijumu Local Government Area, Oyewole Mayowa Solomon.

Solomon reportedly collapsed during a peace and reconciliation meeting at Iyara Town Hall, the headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area. He was said to have suddenly slumped while the meeting was ongoing, leaving political leaders and other participants in shock.

Those present reportedly made efforts to revive him and quickly rushed him to a medical facility in neighbouring Kabba. However, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The cause of his death had not been confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

The meeting was organised by Funsho Olumoko, a former chairman of Ijumu Local Government Area, following his recent assignment by the Ijumu Consultative Forum to help reconcile the various political interests within the area.

The gathering was aimed at resolving internal disagreements, bringing the different factions together and strengthening unity among APC stakeholders ahead of future political activities.

The reconciliation effort followed an earlier meeting in Iyara where APC stakeholders endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for second terms.

That meeting, however, reportedly ended on a tense note after disagreements emerged over local government leadership. The dispute resulted in Solomon and some senior government officials walking out of the gathering.

Friday’s meeting was subsequently convened as an attempt to mend fences and restore unity. It reportedly had in attendance political leaders, local government and ward executives, women and youth leaders, as well as government appointees representing the 15 wards in Ijumu.

Solomon’s sudden death has now thrown a sombre mood over the reconciliation process and could further complicate efforts to unite the APC in Kogi West ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the APC state leadership nor the relevant local authorities had issued an official statement on the incident.
