Three young Nigerians have made the country proud after winning four gold medals at an international mathematics and science competition, putting Nigeria back on the global academic map.
Seventeen-year-old Don Anele Munachimso Marvelous of Diamond Special College, Owerri, emerged as the world’s best in both Senior Science and Senior Mathematics, earning two gold medals. He had earlier been recognised as Nigeria’s best IGCSE Chemistry student and was awarded a $100,000 scholarship to study in Canada.
Another outstanding performer, Onwubiko Chimdiebube Victor, 13, of Evergreen Schools, Enugu, won the gold medal in the Junior Mathematics category. Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest young mathematicians, he is already studying university-level engineering mathematics.
The youngest of the trio, Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan, an 11-year-old Primary Six pupil, claimed the gold medal in the Primary Mathematics category. Despite entering the Science category without preparation, he remained confident throughout the competition, saying he stayed focused and never gave up.
The three pupils won a total of four gold medals for Nigeria after emerging from over 11,500 contestants in the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad. Their participation was made possible through private sponsorship by Educare CEO Alex Onyia, while U.S.-based Nigerian Dr. Michael Taiwo rewarded each of them with ₦1 million in recognition of their remarkable achievement.
Their success is being celebrated as a powerful reminder that Nigerian children can compete with the very best in the world when given the right support and opportunities.
