💔 Senate Demands ₦200 Million Compensation Over NDLEA Tragedy

In a deeply emotional session, the Nigerian Senate has called on President Bola Tinubu to approve a ₦200 million compensation for the family of two-year-old Ivan Onosereba Omhonria, who was tragically killed by a stray bullet fired by NDLEA operatives during a drug raid in Okpanam, Delta State, in July 2023.

Ivan was returning from school when the bullet struck him at his mother’s shop. His younger brother, Eromonsele, was also injured—his eyesight now hangs in the balance.

The NDLEA admitted responsibility and initially offered ₦25 million, but the Senate deemed it grossly inadequate, citing the need for justice, dignity, and compassion.

🏛️ Senate’s Resolution

Led by Senator Neda Imasuen, the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions recommended:

  • ₦200 million compensation to the Omhonria family
  • Full funding of Eromonsele’s medical treatment, including surgery abroad
  • Continued prosecution of the NDLEA officer responsible
  • Oversight by the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure implementation

Senate President Godswill Akpabio declared,

“This Senate stands for life and accountability. No uniform gives you the right to kill someone’s child.”

🧠 Final Thoughts — More Than Money

This isn’t just about compensation. It’s about restoring faith in law enforcement, demanding accountability, and ensuring that no family suffers this kind of loss again.
